Mid-Wave and Long-Wave Infrared Cameras

Thermal cameras, also known as infrared cameras, are sophisticated devices that capture and visualize the heat emitted by objects. Unlike conventional cameras that rely on visible light, thermal cameras detect infrared radiation, which is emitted by all objects based on their temperature. This ability to see heat rather than light enables thermal cameras to be incredibly versatile tools in various fields.

Thermal cameras can be categorized based on the wavelength of infrared radiation they detect, primarily into two main types: Mid-Wave Infrared (MWIR) and Long-Wave Infrared (LWIR) cameras.

MWIR Cameras

Mid-Wave Infrared (MWIR) Cameras: These cameras detect infrared radiation in the mid-wave infrared spectrum, typically ranging from 3 to 5 micrometers. MWIR cameras are known for their high sensitivity and are often used in applications requiring high-resolution imaging and precise temperature measurements. They are commonly employed in military and defense applications, aerospace, and industrial inspections where detailed thermal analysis is crucial.

LWIR

Long-Wave Infrared (LWIR) Cameras: LWIR cameras, on the other hand, capture infrared radiation in the long-wave infrared spectrum, usually between 8 and 14 micrometers. These cameras are highly effective at detecting heat from objects at lower temperatures and are widely used in building inspections, energy audits, and search and rescue operations. LWIR cameras are valued for their ability to visualize thermal patterns in various environments and are typically more cost-effective than MWIR cameras.

In practical applications, thermal cameras—whether MWIR or LWIR—are invaluable for detecting heat loss in buildings, identifying electrical faults, and monitoring mechanical systems for maintenance issues. They are also critical in security and surveillance, search and rescue operations, and medical diagnostics, providing insights that are not visible to the naked eye. By translating thermal energy into an image where different temperatures are represented by different colors, thermal cameras offer a unique perspective on the world, revealing patterns and details that can be crucial for decision-making and problem-solving.

LWIR Cameras

Excelitas provides a diverse selection of LWIR thermal cameras that integrate uncooled detector technology with custom-designed optical modules to ensure superior imaging performance even in challenging visibility conditions.
The uncooled LWIR technology excels in environments where sand, dust, and other obstructions might impair visibility. It outperforms other imaging bands in such scenarios, making it ideal for applications in vehicle systems, surveillance, or border security in hot and sandy conditions.
Our LWIR cameras deliver high-quality, medium-range thermal imaging in a cost-effective package, offering a longer service life compared to cooled MWIR solutions.

MWIR Cameras

Excelitas delivers a diverse range of MWIR thermal cameras that combine exceptional optical performance with a compact design. From high-definition, long-range models providing digital video output to medium-range, standard-definition options with various output types, our MWIR thermal cameras offer unparalleled flexibility to meet both performance and budget needs.

The MWIR waveband is ideal for imaging in marine and tropical environments, making these cameras particularly well-suited for border and coastal surveillance, counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS) applications, and naval and maritime operations.
